DETAILED INFORMATION

A low-carbon alloy steel, SCM 420, is a member of the family of chromium-molybdenum steels. Its exceptional strength, hardness, and wear resistance make it a popular choice for various applications due to its remarkable properties. As a result of its excellent mechanical properties and heat treatment capabilities, SCM 420 offers superior performance and reliability in demanding conditions.

“SCM 420” stands for “Structural Carbon Steel with Molybdenum.” Molybdenum is added to structural carbon steel as a metal alloying element to increase the strength and toughness of the material. As you can see, the carbon content of SCM 420 is relatively low, typically ranging from 0.18% to 0.23%. Due to the low carbon content of the steel, it is not only weldable and easy to fabricate but also solid and hardenable.

Because of its high hardenability, SCM 420 can be effectively hardened by heat treatment processes such as quenching and tempering due to its high hardenability. Manufacturers can achieve desired hardness levels and mechanical properties by adjusting the hardness levels and mechanical properties based on the application’s specific requirements. As a result of proper heat treatment, SCM 420 exhibits excellent strength, toughness, and wear resistance, making it ideal for applications involving heavy loads, impact, and abrasion, and the material is also corrosion-resistant.
