SAE 1018 carbon steel is a low-carbon steel in the SAE-AISI 1000 series. “1018” indicates that it contains approximately 0.18% carbon. Due to its low carbon content, it is easy to cut, drill, and machine into desired shapes.
The excellent weldability of the SAE 1018 carbon steel bright bar is one of its essential characteristics. Conventional welding methods, such as gas, arc, and resistance welding, can be used without preheating or post-weld heat treatment. Its property makes it suitable for various fabrication processes, such as constructing structural components, automotive parts, and machinery.
1018 carbon steel bright bar can be cold-worked or hot-worked to achieve the desired shape. Cold working processes like cold drawing and rolling can improve its dimensional accuracy and surface finish. The material can be reshaped in hot working processes, such as forging and extrusion.

The SAE 1018 Bright steel bar is usually a carbon steel alloy that has improved the surface condition by drawing, peeling, or grinding over the hot rolled finish supplied by the steel mill. As a result, improved machining is achieved, less waste is generated at the assembly stage, physical and mechanical properties are improved, and dimensional tolerances and straightness are improved.
In addition to being usefully malleable, iron-carbon alloys must contain more than 2% carbon by weight and one or more other elements within the following limits: – not more than 10% chromium – not more than 6% manganese – not more than 3% phosphorus – not more than 8% silicon – a total of not more than 10% of other elements.
