Stainless Steel Grade 321 combines excellent high temperature properties with excellent ductility and weldability, which makes it ideal for high temperature applications. If no reducing sulphur gases are present, it resists oxidation in continuous service up to 1150°C. It is also used intermittently at temperatures of up to 1040°C.

The grade 321S (UNS S32108) is used when wet corrosion is expected to occur at a lower temperature range than that which is normally considered “high temperature” service. In comparison to 321S, 321S has a lower carbon content, which reduces its high temperature strength.

Austenitic grades have excellent toughness even at cryogenic temperatures, although other grades are normally used in such environments.

There is a grade 321L (or proprietary versions of this grade), which has a maximum carbon content of 0.03% and is sometimes used in very corrosive environments, such as urea production.

The austenitic class 300 series stainless steel grade 321 belongs to. The JIS SUS 321 black bar has multiple mechanical and corrosion resistance properties, similar to most other stainless steel alloys in the 300 series. The chemistry of this alloy is similar to that of grade 304, with the only exception of the fact that alloy 321 stainless steel round bar has been stabilised by adding titanium to its composition. Titanium is beneficial to any alloy, particularly if the alloy must be welded.

Titanium forms titanium carbides on the weld seam, which are more stable than carbide precipitation. Due to their superior resistance to intergranular corrosion, alloy 321 stainless steel rods do not undergo sensitization at their grain boundaries. 

Titanium also improves the mechanical properties of the astm a276 type 321 flat bar when exposed to extremely high temperatures. Its yield strength and impact resistance remain unchanged. The ASTM A479 UNS S32100 hex bar and grade 304 both offer excellent performance even in cryogenic environments.

Alloys used for cryogenic applications must have good impact strength and mechanical properties, and the alloying of metals like chromium and nickel with smaller amounts of manganese and titanium ensure that the DIN 1.4541 square bar used meets these requirements.

In spite of this, buyers choose to use AISI 321 threaded bars for their applications due to the material’s superior creep strength at high temperatures. While alloys like 304 are prone to failure at such temperatures, grade SS 321 bright bars can thrive and stand the test of time.
