As the standard “18/8” stainless steel, grade 304 is the most versatile and widely used stainless steel, available in a wider variety of products, forms, and finishes. It has excellent forming and welding properties. Due to its balanced austenitic structure, Grade 304 can be deeply dipped without intermediate annealing, making it ideal for manufacturing illustrated stainless parts like sinks, hollow-waASTM A276 AISI 304 Stainless Steel Round Bars has special forming and welding properties, which can be carried out either with or without filler. A post-annealing treatment may be required after welding. 304 stainless steel round bars are corrosion-resistant and perform well under many atmospheric conditions. At temperatures between 870°C and 925°C, stainless steel round bars provide sporadic service. These grades are composed of 8% nickel and 18% chromium, making them more substantial than other alloys. There are several types and sizes of these bars, including square, rectangle, hex, flat, etc. These bars range in size from 1-6 meters. They have a tensile strength of 75000 psi, and a yield strength of 30000 psi. E-applications often require special “304 DDQ” (Deep Drawing Quality) variants.

304 Stainless Steel Bar Corrosion Resistance
In many environments and when in contact with various corrosive media, 304 has excellent corrosion resistance. Chloride-containing environments can cause pitting and crevice corrosion. Above 60°C, stress corrosion cracking can occur.
304 Stainless Steel Bar Heat Resistance
304 has good oxidation resistance in intermittent service up to 870°C and continuous service up to 925°C. If corrosion resistance in water is required, continued use at 425-860°C is not recommended. Due to its resistance to carbide precipitation, 304L is recommended.
304H is recommended when high strength is required at temperatures above 500°C and up to 800°C. Aqueous corrosion resistance will be retained by this material
304 Stainless Steel Bar Fabrication
Stainless steel should only be fabricated with stainless steel-specific tools. Before using any tool or work surface, it must be thoroughly cleaned. By taking these precautions, stainless steel is protected from cross-contamination by easily corroded metals that may discolor the surface.
304 Stainless Steel Bar Cold Working
The stainless steel 304 hardens readily. Often, cold working methods require an intermediate annealing step to alleviate work hardening and prevent tearing or cracking. During annealing, internal stresses should be reduced and corrosion resistance should be optimized.
304 Stainless Steel Bar Hot Working
Forging methods that require hot working should be performed after uniform heating to 1149-1260°C. To ensure maximum corrosion resistance, the fabricated components should be rapidly cooled.
304 Stainless Steel Bar Machinability
Machinability of 304 is good. The following rules can be used to enhance machining:
It is important to keep cutting edges sharp. Excess work hardening is caused by dull edges.
The cuts should be light, but deep enough to prevent work hardening.
Swarf should be kept clear of the work area by using chip breakers.
Due to austenitic alloys’ low thermal conductivity, heat concentrates at the cutting edges. Consequently, coolants and lubricants must be used in large quantities.

After heating to 1010-1120°C, rapid cooling is used for solution treatment or annealing.
304 Stainless Steel Bar Weldability
The fusion welding performance of type 304 stainless steel is excellent. For stainless steel 304, grade 308L filler rods and electrodes are recommended. Post-weld annealing may be necessary for heavy welded sections. If post-weld heat treatment is not possible, grade 321 may be used.
Why use 304 Stainless Steel Bar
- Austenitic stainless steels are extensively used to force down to liquid helium temperatures (-269°C). In impact toughness tests, there is no clearly defined transition from ductile to brittle fracture.
- From ambient to 1100 degrees Celsius, stainless steel is used in a variety of applications.
- As ferritic types have lower strengths at elevated temperatures than austenitic types, they may be limited to lower temperatures in practice. Extended exposure to temperatures over 450°C can also cause embrittlement in ferritic types.
- 304 stainless steel round bars are suitable for most processing techniques and can be used indoors and outdoors. Semi-smooth, dull grey finish with sharp, defined edges and accurate dimensions throughout.
- Aside from its high strength and corrosion resistance, 304 stainless steel is ideal for shelves, brackets, braces, sculptures, and other architectural applications. Chemical processing, food and beverage processing, and aerospace applications also use it.

1.4301 Bar and Section
Types 1.4301 and 1.4307 are grades 304 and 304L, respectively. The most versatile and widely used stainless steel is type 304. Some people still refer to it by its old name, 18/8, derived from its nominal composition of 18% chromium and 8% nickel.
