Steel is widely used in construction. The crystal lattices of iron atoms are hardened by carbon, other elements, and inclusions within iron. Typical steel alloys contain up to 2.1% carbon. Steel’s tensile strength, hardness, and elasticity are determined by the amount of alloying elements in the steel, either solutes or precipitated phases. Steel’s power is only possible at the expense of flexibility.

While steel has been produced in bloomery furnaces for thousands of years, its use has expanded significantly since blister and crucible steel was developed in the 17th century. Mass-produced steel began with the invention of the Bessemer process in the mid-19th century. After Siemens-Martin, Gilchrist-Thomas refined the quality of steel. Mild steel replaced wrought iron after their introduction. Further refinements in the process, such as basic oxygen steelmaking (BOS), further reduced production costs and improved metal quality. Steel is one of the most common materials in the world, with over 1.3 billion tons produced each year. The left hand contains it, as do devices, tools, ships, automobiles, machines, and appliances. Various standards organizations define different grades of modern steel.

The steel 20MnCr5 is a low alloyed engineering case hardening steel with a core tensile strength of 1000 – 1300 N/mm2 and good wear resistance.

Boxes, piston bolts, spindles, camshafts, gears, shafts, and other mechanical parts use it.

Case-hardening is one of the unique properties of 20MnCr5. Steel is heated to a high temperature, then rapidly cooled. Consequently, the surface of the steel hardens while the interior remains relatively soft.

As different elements can be added to achieve different hardness levels, case-hardening allows for greater control over steel’s hardness. 20MnCr5 steel is, therefore, suitable for a wide range of applications, including gears, shafts, and other mechanical components that require strength and durability.

It is carburizing steel used for components requiring high wear resistance surfaces and rigid cores to withstand shock loads and strength to last a long time.

How are 20MnCr5 steel bars used?

  1. In gear production, 20MnCr5 steel is commonly used because of its excellent wear resistance and ability to be case-hardened. It is, therefore, suitable for gears that are subjected to high levels of wear and tear.
  1. Various industries, including automotive and heavy machinery, use 20MnCr5 steel for shafts because of its strength, toughness, and wear resistance.
  1. Axles: 20MnCr5 steel is also commonly used to manufacture axles for automobiles, trucks, and other vehicles. For this application, it is well suited because it can be case-hardened and has excellent wear resistance.
  1. 20MnCr5 steel is suitable for producing cams and camshafts due to its case-hardening property.

The alloy would be helpful for spur gears and helical gears requiring little or no size change during heat treatment and no post-heat treatment finishing.
