SS17-4PH material properties can be optimized through age hardening heat treatment of the bars. It is by heating the 17-4 ph h900 round bar to a temperature of 900°F that the strength of the metal is increased. Although AMS 5643 Steel 17-4 PH Bright Bar rivals the corrosion resistance of grade 304 stainless steel in most conditions, its corrosion resistance is generally considered better than that of 400 series stainless steel.

Therefore, SS 17-4 PH Cold Finished Bars could be used for those applications that require a combination of moderate corrosion resistance and magnetic properties with an unusually high tensile strength. Alloy 630 stainless steel bar can be easily welded as well as processed by conventional fabrication practices.

As a martensitic precipitation hardening stainless steel, it is characterized by high tensile strength and high yield strength obtained by solution annealing followed by low-temperature age hardening. In many environments, 17-4PH has corrosion resistance comparable to 304 austenitic stainless steel.
